Concerts Sweden will close down in 2011!

Since the mid 90s, EMS has been a department within Concerts Sweden (Rikskonserter). The present Government has now decided to close down Concerts Sweden in 2011. But that doesn't mean that we will be left homeless. Instead we will become a department within The Swedish National Collections of Music. We are thrilled to know that we can continue working as before and are looking forward to new challenges and collaborations.

Sound art course at EMS

A sound art course, resulting in a masters, has now started at EMS. The course is a collaboration between EMS, Mats Lindström and DI, Anders Aare. They have invited several prominent sound artists, artists and composers to teach the five students who were selected to attend. A lot of the tuition is taking place in EMS studios. The five students come from different areas: radio documentary making, art, composing and singing/performing.

As a result of the EMS/National library digitisation project, all music created at EMS starting at 1964 is now searchable in the DISMARC portal. DISMARC is short for Discovering music archives, and one can read more about the project here. Thanks to Lena Forsgren at Svenskt visarkiv (Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research) and Gerda Koch at DISMARC, who made this possible!

To search for EMS material exclusively, go to Advanced search, select "Archive" as field and enter "ems". There are about 3800 items in all, but one can add additional search terms with "+" to narrow the search:

New Studio Engineer at EMS

Our studio engineer of 40 years, Göran Svensson will sadly be retiring at the end of November. Göran has been a witness and key engineer in the history of the electroacoustic music evolution here at EMS!

On 1/10, the new studio engineer at EMS will be joining us! His name is Daniel Araya and has previously worked as a sound engineer etc at the Swedish Radio. He is also very big on analogue synthesizers and knows all about our Buchla and Serge here at EMS and can cure them when they are sick!

Those of you who have been to the Norberg festival know that he is one of the driving forces behind it and may have danced at his own club Camp 303!

Composer's radio etc.

The Society of Swedish composers broadcasts music by Swedish composers on the Internet under the name Composer's radio. This is not really news, since the broadcasting has been going on since 2005. What is new, though, is that all new programmes will be in English, starting March 2009. A nice complement to Electroacoustic Sweden!

Tamas Ungvary has posted another video from EMS. It's a jam session with Tamas and fellow composer/pianist Michael Smith.

Jesper Olsson writes about Swedish sound art and our new master's programme in daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (only in Swedish, sorry).

I'm back in my job! :-) It's great to be back.
Digitizing the archives is great fun. It's really interesting listening to what was being done here in the early 90s. So I'm carrying on with that too. The EMS database will be something of a cultural treasure. Especially for researchers...

About the film, see entry beneath! That was from the days when EMS was located on Kungsgatan 8 in Stockholm. The studios are now on Söder Mälarstrand 61 (München bryggeriet), Stockholm too. Fantastic equipment… Things don't look as Star Trek-like anymore which is a shame really.

Here's a video of composer Tamas Ungvary using the EMS hybrid studio/synthesiser in 1974. The studio was equipped with 24 analogue oscillators, digitally controlled by an 18-bit DEC PDP-15 computer. Thanks for this wonderful piece of nostalgia, Tamas! /Pär

Changes at EMS

Well, in retrospect, the previous entry is quite ironic. Yes, we ARE suffering from the major crisis that Concerts Sweden/Rikskonserter are undergoing and yes, we have to put up with staff cuts. In fact I was laid off! In a few months' time I will no longer be working at EMS. I have had a wonderful time here at EMS which is a fantastic resource, quite unique in its kind. Anyone who is interested in the electroacoustic medium will agree that this is a great environment. Once you are a user of EMS you can book studio time and use up-to-date software and analogue synthesizers etc, and use the library with its collection of subject-related books. It's a brilliant working space. A bit like a public library with studios. Luckily, I'm still a user so I will go on coming to EMS and keep my fingers crossed that this is just a short interlude before something more constructive happens!

Happy 2009! …?

What will 2009 have in store for EMS? This is the big question at the moment as we are waiting to see how our beloved institution will be affected by the major crisis at Concerts Sweden (Rikskonserter), under which we are a department since the mid nineties. It may mean staff cuts, which would be very unfortunate, in a time when we are actually expanding work-wise more than ever. More and more composers from all over the world are interested in coming here to work. Those who have been here say they love the atmosphere and find working and composing here very easy (that's because we really do our best to make them feel comfortable!). Over the past few years, our connection to the Norberg festival has grown and we are already looking forward to the summer. The archive project where Arkivet för Ljud och Bild (i.e. the department for audiovisiual media at the Swedish Royal Library) is a strong partner. That's just a few of all the projects in which we are involved. Keep your fingers crossed for us and don't hesitate to show your moral support!

EMS' Christmas party and Studio 1 relaunch

This year, we were very sensible for all sorts of reasons and decided to throw several parties in the same evening. For one thing, Concerts Sweden, the organisation under which EMS is a department, is undergoing a serious crisis and about 25 people are facing the risk of losing their jobs. So, with regards to this and the general crisis going on in the world, we decided not to have our usual staff Christmas dinner and instead have a joint party with our fantastic, talented, intelligent, artistic, ingenuous and hard-working users. That turned out to be a great idea and nobody wanted to leave. Because we have been having to sort out a problem with the air in studio 1 (caused by mould), the studio has been closed for the most part of 2008. We now have a new mixer there and the studio has been pimped up quite a bit making it a very nice environment to work in, totally problem free. So, naturally, we had yet another thing to celebrate. You can see glamourous photos of the do on Flickr.

We are now very much looking forward to year 2009. Goodness knows what's in store, but so many inspiring things have been happening this year making us full of expectations for the future. We have had more than twenty guest composers and hope that we will be hosting as many next year. Our library has been growing steadily, thanks to the exceptional librarian we have (Pär Johansson, who is also a composer of acousmatic music). A new EMS training course (the professional one) has started and people are working away on projects, big and small.

François Bayle's visit in Stockholm

The hall was packed with students on Friday November 21 2008 at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm where François Bayle held a seminar (the title being ...mes images). Mr. Bayle spoke for three hours non-stop (almost) spell-binding his audience.
On Saturday 22 November a concert was given at Fylkingen to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Fylkingen. All pieces were by François Bayle and dedicated to various collegues and friends who are now dead: Arc pour Gérard Grisey, Ombres blanches (Théâtre d'Ombres -2), omaggio a L.Berio, L'Oreille étonnée en salut à Olivier Messiaen, Inventions à Pierre Schaeffer in memoriam, Univers nerveux à Karlheinz Stockhausen in memoriam. Again, the hall was packed with people and the atmosphere concentrated. For many, this was a longed for occasion!

The Autumn is here and the staff at EMS are back from their holidays.

A new EMS course will start shortly. 10 students will be studying electroacoustic music making in depth. There are a whole range of teachers tied to the course.

Fylkingen will be celebrating its 75th anniversary. EMS is borrowing François Bayle from Paris for the occasion. It will be a great pleasure to have him here (22/11 2008). There are many more artists on the programme. Check Fylkingen's website to get the whole picture.

Our guest composer of the summer, Jo Thomas will be performing her new piece, Alpha, composed in studio 2 here at EMS at the Cutting Edge concert series in London on 15 November 2008.

Mats Lindström, artistic and administrative director of EMS and Andrea Neumann and Sabine Ercklentz have just been to Linz, Austria to collect a prize for an interactive international video performance premiered at the Art's Birthday celebration at Moderna Museet in Stockholm 2008.

Four hour concert in Hågelbyparken, Stockholm

Centrum för Nutida Konstmusikis presenting its first big event on Sunday 31 August from 12 noon to 4 pm. Spend one whole afternoon listening to sounds, noises, music, and watching dance in this green venue. It will be an occasion to celebrate green sound. 23 different programmes will be heard and seen: electronic, acoustic, notated and improvised music. A modern dance piece will also be presented. The Norberg festival

was a great success! It took place between 24 and 26 July in Norberg (Västmanland) about 2 hours train journey from Stockholm.
Check out their website if you want to find out what took place there.
There were several EMS artists: Sabine Vogel and Erik Drescher, Linus Gabrielsson and our guest composer of the month Jo Thomas from the UK. Also Mats Lindstöm and Sören Runolf played a long duo to celebrate their twentieth anniversary as a duo.
The architecture of the derelict Mimerlaven is quite fascinating and the ensuing sounds and accoustics are well worth a visit. We are already looking forward to the next Norberg festival.

German Sound Art Award 2008

Sound workshop for children

We have just had sound workshops for children here two days in a row. EMS received a total of 100 children aged 6-9 (luckily divided into groups of 11-13 or so) for a workshop led by Ida Lundén. The sound workshops are always a great success and it was wonderful to see all the children's happy and delighted faces as they discovered the powerful sounds and effects they could achieve with the various synthesizers and weird instruments that Ida had brought. Ida is an experienced music teacher and each lesson with her is well thought-out, filling the 45 minutes to the brim. There was never a dull moment and the children didn't once lose focus or were bored. At the end of each lesson, the children got to perform a mini concert. All of them did very well and took their mission seriously; and they all produced very different things. It is clear that electronics and electroacoustic music should already be taught to this age group in the music schools!

Årets tema för Art's Birthday Party är "Forever Young". De medverkande
inbjuds att fantisera fritt kring framtidens popkonst och popmusik.

- På Art's Birthday Party bryts barriärer mellan finkultur och
populärkultur ned. Likaså barriärer mellan vad som kan kallas musik
och konst, säger Erik Mikael Karlsson, producent på SR. Han är
tillsammans med producenten Stefan Holmström initiativtagare till
evenemanget.

Art's Birthday Party 2008 produceras av Sveriges Radio P2 och EBU i
samarbete med Moderna Museet, EMS (Elektroakustisk musik i Sverige) och
SRc vid SR Radioteatern. 2006 års sändning från Art's Birthday
tilldelades Ikarospriset i radioklassen.

Art's Birthday Party 2008 äger rum på Moderna Museet i Stockholm den 17
januari 2008 kl. 19.00-24.00. Ingång Sjösidan. Fri entré. Evenemanget
direktsänds i Sveriges Radio P2 och på webben.

Dessutom officiell efterfest på BERNS - klubben fram till kl 04

Just when you've got over Christmas and the New Year, it's time for the fourth birthday celebration of Art. Someone decided that January 17th would be a perfect date for that. The party will take place at Moderna Museet, starting at 7 p.m. and going on until 12:00 p.m. Rumour has it that it will go on somewhere else after that. Keep your eyes skinned. The Theremin is a bit of a theme this year as we have two Theremin artists on stage: Dorit Chrysler and Pamelia Kurstin, from U.S.A. There is also a live-electronics duo: Andrea Neumann and Sabine Ercklentz from Berlin. The P2 website about this should be up and running some time next week, so don't forget to check it. If you want to go to the party, make sure you get there early, or you might not get in at all! If you don't get in, you can watch it on the internet and see live pictures at the same time – that's always something!

So much has been happening here at EMS, there has been no time left over for the blogging. At the moment, we are enjoying the presence of Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri, currently living in Amsterdam and Erik Drescher, straight from Berlin. Michael Maierhof, a composer from Hamburg and one of the leading personalities behind the festival of contemporary music Stock 11 there, joined them for a few days, working on a project together with Erik Drescher.

This week, we also have the pleasure of the company of Anders Vinjar, a composer from Norway.

It's always nice when people from abroad come to EMS. We learn a lot of things during our lunches and coffee breaks! We also believe that EMS is appreciated by overseas composers because of the peace and quiet and the fact that they can get away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives and just concentrate on their work!

Final Cut Pro

Some EMS users are becoming better at this as we had a much appreciated course for pros led by a Final Cut Pro pro, Sasskia Holmberg, last week. Over the past year, the film editing studio here at EMS has been booked more and more frequently for sound/image projects.

New, different, sound project in the pipeline

Lennart Westman is a composer who often uses the studios here at EMS and initiates several projects yearly. So far this year, he has traveled to Mexico and Argentina, presenting Swedish Electroacoustic music. His next project is a little different: living next to a building site in Stockholm he became inspired while enjoying the construction sounds from his balcony. He recorded some, to make a piece of the recorded material. He has also involved photographer Josef Doukkali and together they will make a film/bildspiel reflecting the birth of the new building. The building company, NCC, are financing this artistic project and the end result on DVD will be offered as a "moving in" present to the future inhabitants of the building! Nice idea!

Concert in the big gasometer in Gävle

10 November 2007 at 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at STORA GASKLOCKAN in Gävle. IDKA has organised this nocturnal 12-hour long concert where artists from France, Turkey, Singapore, Gävle and Stockholm will be featured.

There is still time (last performance 27 October) to see Minnesdvärgar which was premiered 22 October. Lars Åkerlund composed the music here at EMS. He, Johanna Ekström and Björn Elisson have collaborated several times before before. Dancers are: Anja Birnbaum, Sverre M Heidenberg, Love Källman, Sebastian Lingserius, Charlotta Öhverholm.

Lars Åkerlund is busy at EMS composing the music for a new choreography by Björn Elisson: Minnesdvärgar. The premiere will be taking place on 22 October 2007 at 7 p.m. at Dansens Hus, Lilla scenen, in Stockholm. Check Dansens Hus website for full information. This is one of several productions together with the choreographer. Lars Åkerlund has also composed a great deal of music for Per Jonsson, another well-known Swedish choreographer who died in 1998.

Andrea Neumann and Sabine Ercklentz at EMS

Andrea Neumann is a live-electronics musician who has invented her own instrument – the Inside piano – which is what it sounds like: the amplified inside of a piano. She uses a certain amount of objects and the strings of the piano to create her own sound world. Last spring she was a guest composer at EMS and is now coming back, together with Sabine Ercklentz, on 8-17 October, with the support of Framtidens Kultur.

There will probably be a concert at some point, so keep your eyes skinned.

Research on Akos Rozmann

This week at EMS, we have the company of Gergely Loch, an enthusiastic musicology student of the Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest, Hungary. Gergely´s aim is to perform research on Akos Rozmann, one of the most prominent composers of electroacoustic music in Sweden. Akos Rozmann, originally from Hungary but residing in Sweden since the 1970s, sadly died two years ago. Up until his death, he was one of the composers who worked the most frequently here at EMS. For a long time he was an organist at the Catholic Church, where he also had his subterranean sound studio. He stopped writing instrumental music very early on as a composition student and left us a great number of electroacoustic works such as Impulsioni, Twelve stations, Images of dream and death to name but a few. His music is strongly emotional, and the richness of the compositional material has in most cases led to long gripping developments, leaving the listener both shaken and stirred. Mass, first performed in 2004 at the German Church in Stockholm, is several hours long and it took five days to perform it in its entirety. Apart from the music we know, Rozmann left a considerable amount of tapes, diaries etc. which we are delighted to know that Gergely Loch is going to study while preparing his PhD. This will be time well spent.

Update August, 25: We've now got a Flickr page too! More photos and vids will come in due time, but for now you can view some pics from the Rålektronika and Lövstabruk festivals.

Rålektronika is pronounced "Rawlectronica", which is a pun on "Raw electronic" and Rålambshov (pronounced "Raw-lambs-haw"), the park in Stockholm where the festival took place.

The EAM festival at Rålambshov is arranged by VEMS (a society for composers working at EMS), and has been an annual event since 2001, although this year it moved to Långholmen, at the opposite side of Riddarfjärden in Stockholm.

This week, Lei Yang, the curator of the Notch festival in China came to visit EMS. Notch stands for NOrdic countries + CHina. Lei Yang was in fact visiting all the Nordic countries to establish more personal contacts with people involved in electronic music. Next festival is in October 2007. We hope this will lead to more collaborations between Northern Europe and China.
